In Jane Austen's first novel (unpublished until after her death) naïve Catherine Morland leaves her large family's home in the country to visit Bath. There she makes female friends and male acquaintances of various degrees of gentility, and has a greater opportunity to learn about life and manners than was afforded her by her previous seclusion. The book also parodies the Gothic novels Catherine adores; especially as she visits the titular converted abbey, which her reading has led her to expect will be the romantic haunt of sinister danger.
